Mercedes 7G VGS Programming / SCN using OEM Mercedes Xentry / DAS Online. This SL came into the workshop this week as the VGS conductor plate had been changed. The vehicle would start however no gears could be selected to allow the vehicle to drive.
Firstly we did a full diagnostic test plan to ensure no underlying faults we apparent, This report was then saved and the faults were erased to ensure we were starting a fresh and no false positives were present from the VGS change.

Mercedes VGS / TCU – Programming the VIN into a Virgin Unit
Next we needed to check the VGS was a Virgin unit so we performed the initial startup and manually entered the vehicles VIN number. After the VIN number was entered this allows the initial start up and vehicle personalization to ensure the VGS can be synchronized with the CAN BUS Network.
As you will see from the image the VIN number from the vehicle is automatically read from the vehicle and the VIN stored value is the VIN entered.
To ensure the unit is virgin the VIN stored in the control module should be able to be changed meaning the unit has not been coded to another vehicle or that the unit has been externally virginised.
After the VIN number is entered into the VGS we then confirm this and this effectively embeds the VIN into the module.
Once the VIN is accepted by the VGS we can then start to perform the synchronization with the VGS to to the rest of the CAN BUS network.
The sync will now allow the VGS to become live on the CAN BUS network. This will mean other ECU’s will be able to see and communicate with with VGS.
At this point in time the VGS is active on the network but is not yet personalized nor has any SCN coding been performed so in terms of data the unit is blank apart from the vehicle VIN number.

Next we disable to the transport protection so the VGS is able to be personalized and activated. As you will see above the procedure is very simple and self explanatory. In two steps we are able to remove the transport protection and personalize the VGS to the vehicles VIN number.
Mercedes VGS SCN Coding – Programming & Updating
VGS SCN coding, the SCN coding time is around 6 – 20 minutes depending on battery voltage and data speed. Its is strongly advised you have external power connected and a wired internet connection.
As you can see the SCN coding on this SL is now complete and there is no newer software application available for this vehicle. In some cases normally within vehicles aged between 3 and 5 years old you may find additional updates are performed but on this particular vehicle (2009) we had no further actions to take.
